Description
Rare opportunity to be able to buy the best. This is one of the nicest original ghia's I have seen in person in years. Below is the history of the car along with the originality that is never seen. This is the closest you will come to experiencing time travel. When sitting in the car it feels as if you are at the dealership back in 1967 going for a test drive. The interior is spot on perfect.
This 12,000 Mile original black coupe was purchased in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania during October of 1967. The buyer’s wife had always admired the Karmann Ghia, yet she was a large woman and unable to get behind the steering wheel to drive. Her husband’s intent in buying the car was to entice her into losing significant weight to enjoy her new VW. Unfortunately the plan didn’t work out and the coupe languished in their garage for years. After the husband died his widow kept the car registered in the garage and available for their son (a Cambridge, MA college professor) to drive on his visits to PA. From 1967 until 1990 the coupe rolled just over 7,000 miles from new. In 1989 the aging widow decided to give her grandson and fiancé the Karmann Ghia as a wedding present. The young couple took exception to the thoughtless gift and did not care for the car. They wanted to inherit the vacation home. The professor was angered by their lack of appreciation and took the car back. He advertised it for sale shortly after and it joined the New Hampshire VW collection a week later.
The wood grain dash paneling on the glove box door had cracked with a piece missing and was replaced with an available reproduction piece. Four of the original 5.60X15 Continental white walls were still on the car until this past summer. They were replaced with a new set of Firestone 5.60X15whitewalls from Coker Tire. (The fifth original Continental tire was chewed through by a porcupine while sitting outdoors in readiness for a fall foliage tour of New England in 1996). The original long block was changed under warranty during the first year, as the bearing saddles failed. (This weakness was not uncommon for a number of the early 1500 engines). The replacement block was not re stamped with a serial number. The paint is 90% original. The carpeting, upholstery, glass, chrome and running gear is as it came from the factory. The black coupe has a bit of patina, yet is one of the most original VW I’ve ever seen.
In 1995 the Franklin Mint of Pennsylvania initiated a search for the most original Karmann Ghia Coupe in the United States. This 1967 Coupe was selected. It was trailered to Franklin Center, PA for a five day photo shoot of ten thousand pictures. A Certificate of Authenticity from the Franklin Mint and one of the first production 1/24th scale models is included with the sale of this Karmann Ghia.
This car has rolled less than 5,000 miles since taking up residence in New Hampshire. Nearly all of the miles were added by Volkswagen hobby friends from the United States and Europe on annual three day Fall Foliage Tours of northern New England. It has spent the rest of its time the slumbering on a four-post lift among older VW relatives…dreaming of road trips.
